oatmeal bread recipe and some other food

i started my next project for penelope's handmade christmas....PLAY FOOD. penelope is so good at playing pretend and i thought if we got her a play set of dishes it would be just perfect. we have a carrot and 2 strawberries so far. i am wanting to have a pretty big bag of it for christmas.

and now the recipe for this bread was requested, and so here it is! i hope you love it.

oatmeal bread | the whites

1 1/2 T. yeast
2 1/2 c. warm milk
2 c. old fashioned oats
1/2 c. molasses or honey
4 t. salt
6 1/2 c. flour
2 T. oil

soften yeast in warm milk. put oatmeal, molasses or honey and salt in your mixer bowl (i use my kitchen aid...my dad does it all by hand) and mix. pour yeast and milk mixture in along with 2 c. flour. mix well. add oil and remaining flour and knead until dough is bouncy (may need to add more flour.) let rise until doubled - this may take a while, because of the denseness of the dough. punch down and divide into 3 loaf pans. let rise until doubled and then bake 35-40 min at 400 degrees.

  1. When I read to cook the bread at 400 degrees I almost died!! I thought, geez that is super dooper hot and will burn the bread. Then I remembered you're American. And it's 400 F. Not 400 C.

  2. the bread looks so yummy - quick, maybe silly question but are you using quick oats or like old fashion steel cut oats for this? I am assuming the old fashion steel cut is what you mean but I am type A :)..as per usual I just adore your blog!

  4. Yes, Rebekah, old fashioned steel cut oats are best for this recipe. Thank you for helping me clear that up.

Christy, it is great to have readers from outside the u.s.! I should have stated 400 degrees farenheight, sorry. I believe it is 204-205 C. Thanks for reading.
